To mark the occasion of Belhaven Smokehouse’s recent expansion, which has cost in excess of £500k, Fergus Ewing MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy & Connectivity, vised Belhaven Smokehouse on 22 February to officially open the new factory extension and view first-hand the achievements of this small East Lothian employer.
Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said: ‘It’s fantastic to see this new extension first hand and see how the Scottish Government’s £113,000 funding will help the Belhaven Smokehouse to increase its production and develop new product ranges. ‘The work of businesses like Belhaven Smokehouse is contributing to Scotland’s food and drink success story and will help us in our ambitions to double the value of the industry to £30 billion by 2030.’
Belhaven Smokehouse Ltd, established over 40 years ago has grown from strength to strength. Originally specialising in fish farming they were unusual in that they added value to their produce by gutting, filleting and smoking trout, which they sold directly to their customers.
Not a company to stand still, they diversified to smoking Shetland salmon, local white fish, meat and cheese. Production has grown steadily, so much so, they have outgrown their premises four times. Their more recent, specially designed premises reflect the need to keep pace with food standard agency demands for quality, food safety controls and traceability.
Working with a number of key customers they have developed a range of bespoke cures for both salmon and trout. Their reputation for excellent quality, customer service and consistency of product has enabled them to secure customers in many parts of the United Kingdom and Abroad. Increase in turnover has exceeded expectations and we are already exceeding figures which have been projected for 2019.
Belhaven Smokehouse has been the recipient of both local and national awards which encourages them to achieve further goals, whilst at the same time, maintaining their core principles for quality and diversity. Their farm shop, which is open seven days a week, not only showcases their range of fresh and smoked produce; but stocks a terrific range of East Lothian and Scottish produce.
